Teagasc Forestry Advisory Clinics Running from January 20 to February 12 |
|
| A nationwide series of forestry clinics for people who are considering forestry has been organised by Teagasc’s Forestry Development Department. These one-to-one consultations with an experienced forestry adviser are being held in local Teagasc Offices between January 20 and February 12, 2025. Prior booking of a one-to-one forestry consultation is essential. For dates, locations, contact details and to book your free consultation, see the table below or visit www.teagasc.ie/forestryclinics. Please bring maps and other relevant information on the day to optimise your clinic experience.
The current Forestry Programme 2023-2027 offers landowners very attractive opportunities in relation to forest creation with a range of planting options and associated financial supports available. A land use change to forestry, will raise many questions. A consultation with your Teagasc forestry adviser will provide independent and objective advice, empowering you to make informed decisions on many relevant issues. Although the emphasis for the upcoming clinics is on new planting; existing forest owners, regardless of what stage their forest is at, can also avail of this opportunity to pick up valuable management tips. These clinics provide an ideal opportunity to get answers to your forestry questions – don’t miss it!
Forestry clinics are organised in association with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

Go for a forest walk, It's good for you, and your forest! |
|
| Christmas is a great time to take a break from the treadmill of daily life for a while and spend some quality time in nature. Why not take time out over the Christmas period and go for a walk in a forest near you? The health benefits – both physical and mental – are well documented. Going for a walk improves physical health, stimulates the brain, boosts mental well being and helps us to sleep better. The 20,000+ forest owners in Ireland are lucky that they can go for a walk in their own wood and at the same time check if anything needs to be done. The checklist below will give you ideas on what to look out for.
Winter management tasks
- Maintain good access to and through your forest
- Check tree stocking in new forests and replace trees where necessary
- Check drainage and improve where necessary
- Check fences and repair where necessary
- Carry out formative shaping on young broadleaves, especially oak
- Assess your trees, and form opinions on quality and management objectives
- Carry out high pruning if/when appropriate
- Cut inspection paths in your conifer plantations approaching first thinning
- And don’t forget to review your insurance cover
